Premier Episode of Siggie presenting her take on the history of the monarchs of England in the context of her favorite topic….herself. Here she discusses the first true king of England, Aethelstan of the House of Wessex, the son of Edward the Elder.
So, this first guy I’m reading about in the House of Wessex… that was kind of
like the beginning of England and the monarchy.
So, this guy, King Aethelstan… he reigned for like 14 years… 925 to 939. He was the king of the
Anglo-Saxons, first, for a couple of years and then he became the first king of all of
England in 927. He conquered the Vikings. [And they weren’t happy about it.] Yeah so, he
consolidated his rule with victory over the Scots and the Irish at the Battle of
Brunanburh. I just realized something. Let’s see… this guy, he had victory over
the Scots, the Irish at this battle. I guess it was only whatever was within
walking distance, right? Or trotting distance, if they were like on
horses, you know? Like, they couldn’t have parachuted in or anything, right? Or
helicoptered in, or… Like, like, like they didn’t bother with like Germany, right? Or
France? It was just too far for them, right, at this point? Because this is like
a long time ago. Right? I mean, I don’t think it’s just a coincidence that these guys, you know…
just defeated the Scots, Scotland, north of England and Ireland, which is…
west of England… His brother, Edmund the First… his
half-brother was his successor when this guy when Aethelstan died. His brother
obviously wasn’t worth anything because the Vikings came back, and they kicked
the crap out of Edmund the First and England at the time.
